In a hydraulic clearance adjusting element (3), an inner end face (11) of a cylindrical body (9), bearing against a cam (4) of a camshaft (5), rises outwardly. As a result, air which escapes out of passages (19, 20) of a hollow plunger (16) bearing against the said end face (11) can flow outwards in the cylindrical body (9) so that on an intake stroke, it cannot pass back into the hollow plunger (16). <IMAGE>
