PURPOSE:To reduce user operation at the time of forming a table in a document by scanning the contents of the document which is already created and forming the table automatically. CONSTITUTION:An automatic table generating means ATTMK is provided which decides whether or not characters are sectioned with space characters and generate a frame surrounding the characters when so. The automatic table means ATTMK scans the document from the head of the 1st page to search for a starting space character. The character is regarded as a temporary start point to decide the temporary external frame of the table. Then a scan is made inside the temporary external frame to find the external frame of the table. Further, a scan is made inside the external frame to search for space characters, which are replaced with ruled lines.
