Gouraud shading on graphics display apparatus.

A Gouraud shading technique for a raster-scanned graphics display apparatus in which a polygon to be shaded is regarded as a 2 dimensional (X,Y) representation in 3 dimensional (X,Y,Intensity) space whereby the intensity gradient along any scan line is calculated and is then used to compute the intensity of each pel on this and the other scan lines constituting the polygon. Preferably only the intensities of polygon edge (pels) on the leading (or trailing) edge(s) of the polygon are calculated before the stored intensity gradient is used to compute the scan line pel intensities including the trailing (or leading) edge(s) of the polygon.
