Charging apparatus of the double bell, double hopper type for shaft furnaces, comprises a bifurcated charging shoot 30 disposed below the lower hopper 24 and bell 28, each limb 32, 34 of which is itself bifurcated to give delivery shoots 36, 38 disposed in planes at right-angles to that of limbs 32, 34, rotatable wedge-shaped diverters 46, 48 and 49 being disposed at each bifurcation to vary the quantity of charge material passing into each limb. Waste gases are drawn by an extractor fan (not shown) into shoots 36, 38 and through offtakes 42, 44 respectively, formed in limbs 32, 34. |
