PURPOSE:To improve the wear resistance of a perpendicular magnetic recording medium by laminating a perpendicularly magnetized film consisting of cobalt and cobalt oxide or cobalt, iron and/or nickel and the oxides thereof and carbon film in this order on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:The perpendicularly magnetized film consisting of the cobalt and cobalt oxide or cobalt, iron and/or nickel and the oxides thereof and the carbon film are laminated in this order on the substrate. At least the cobalt and oxygen among the elements constituting the perpendicularly magnetized film are incorporated into the carbon film. The materials for the substrate are exemplified by metals as represented by aluminum, copper, iron and stainless steel, inorg. materials such as glass and ceramics and various org. polymer materials such as plastic films. The perpendicular magnetic recording medium which has the good wear resistance, is free from degradation in reproduction output and recording density characteristic and is low in cost is thereby obtd.
