PURPOSE:To make the access work of recorded information simple and convenient by connecting a connector, for communicating a signal between a semiconductor memory and an external used equipment, to the semiconductor memory. CONSTITUTION:The semiconductor memory 10 in which information related to the record of a recording area, e.g., error information or index information is stored beforehand, is installed in a place, e.g., a cartridge case or a card body, other than the place, where the information is recorded by a light, e.g., a recording area such as an optical disk 2 or an optical card. Then, the connector 9 for communicating a signal between the semiconductor memory 10 and the external used equipment, e.g., a drive device or a host computer is connected to the semiconductor memory 10. If the information, related to a retrieval, is stored previously in the semiconductor memory 10 in this way, the address of the required information can be known immediately. Thus, the retrieval of the information can be efficiently performed in a short time.
