PURPOSE:To securely join ceramics and metal in a short period of time by subjecting a metal or alloy which is interposed between the ceramics and the metal and reacts with the ceramics to melting by an electron beam. CONSTITUTION:The metal or alloy which reacts with the ceramics in a molten state is interposed between the ceramics and metal to be joined. The metal or alloy consisting of >=1 kinds among Ti, Ca, Zr, Al, Nb, W, Mo, Ni, Fe, and Tl and Ti-Ca-Ag alloy are adequate as the above-mentioned metal or alloy. The interposed metal or alloy is then melted by projection of the electron beam thereto for about several seconds. The ceramics and metal are thereby securely joined. Since the electron beam is focused and projected to the ceramics and metal in a short period of time, thermal stresses are decreased. This method is advantageous for joining of thermally weak materials as well.
