PURPOSE:To store N-vinyl formamide in such a state as it can give a water-soluble polymer of high viscosity by polymerization, by storing N-vinyl formamide in an inert-gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:N-vinyl formamide is stored in a tightly closed vessel in an inert-gas (nitrogen or argon) atmosphere at 15-40 deg.C. When the pH of N-vinyl formamide is stored so that its pH is adjusted to 5-8, preferably 6-8, in dilution with water 5 times the quantity of the formamide, the deterioration of the N-vinyl formamide can be prevented more effectively. The N-vinyl formamide is obtained by reaction of acetaldehyde with formaldehyde, methoxidization and pyrolysis. N-vinyl formamide is used as a polymerizable monomer giving a water-soluble polymer having excellent coagulation properties.
