PURPOSE:To prepare the title catalyst having a high polymn. activity and providing a polymer which is high in bulk density and excellent in powdery property, by bringing a suspension of solid aluminoxane into contact with a soln. of a IV-B transition metal compd. of the periodic table. CONSTITUTION:A soln. obtd. by dissolving aluminoxane of formulas I and II (where R is a hydrocarbon group; m is >=2) in a solvent (e.g. benzene) is brought into contact with a solvent (e.g. pentane) which is insoluble or hardly soluble in this aluminoxane to separate solid aluminoxane, so that a suspension of solid aluminoxane is obtained. This suspension is then brought into contact with a soln. of a IV-B transition metal compd. of the periodic table [e.g. bis(cyclopentadieny)zirconium monochloride monohalide] to give a solid catalyst for the polymn. of olefins, wherein the ratio of the transition metal atoms (M) to the aluminum metal atoms, M/Al, is 0.2-0.001, having an average particle diameter of 5-200mum and a specific surface area of 20-1,000m<2>/g.
