PURPOSE:To produce a ring-opened polymer suitable as a polymer for optics or a raw material thereof by subjecting a specific polycyclic norbornene monomer available at low cost, to ring opening polymerization, if desired, together with other comonomer. CONSTITUTION:A monomer (mixture) of pentacyclopentadecadiene of the formula I and/or pentacyclopentadecene of the formula II in an amount of 100-5mol.% and dicyclopentadiene and/or dihydrodicyclopentadiene in an amount of 0-95mol.% is polymerized in the presence of a ring opening polymerization catalyst. A polycyclic norbornene ring-opened polymer is obtained which contains 100-5mol.% repeating unit of the formula III and 0-95mol.% repeating unit of the formula IV and has an intrinsic viscosity eta of 0.01-20dl/g measured at 25 deg.C in toluene. This ring-opened polymer is excellent in heat resistance and good in balance of various properties, for example, clarity, water resistance, chemical resistance, solvent resistance, dielectric properties, and mechanical properties such as rigidity, etc. and can be utilized in various field such as the optical field.
