PURPOSE:To prepare the title carrier which is excellent in particle property and has a polymn. performance on a practical use level, by bringing a specified magnesium-containing solid into contact with a halogen-containing alcohol. CONSTITUTION:1g-atom of metallic magnesium, 1-2mol. of a halogenated hydrocarbon of formula RX (where R is 1-20C alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl; X is a halogen) and at least 0.5mol. of a compd. of the formula as shown (where X<1> is H, a halogen, a 1-20C hydrocarbon group; M is B, C, Al, Si, P; R<1> is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group; m is the valence of M; m>n>=0) brought into contact with each other at 0-250 deg.C for 0.5-10hr to give a magnesium- containing solid. This solid product is brought into contact with 0.05-20mol. of a halogen-containing alcohol (e.g. 2-chloroethanol) per 1g-atom of magnesium at -20-+15 deg.C for 0.1-100hr to give a carrier for a catalyst for the polymn. of olefins, which has a BET specific surface area of at most 1,000m<2>/g and a pore volume of at most 1.00cm<3>/g.
