The shaft (18,16) bearing (1; 1a,b) assembly is arranged between the high pressure (3) and low pressure stage (25) of a turbine and comprises a carrier medium film to provide damping of vibrations, transmitted from one stage to the other one. The medium, pref. oil, is supplied to an annular chamber (7), which rotates with the shaft and is arranged on the upstream side of an annular damping gap (2) such that the oil enters this gap under the action of centrifugal force. - The gap may be defined by bearing components of the high pressure turbine stage, and the oil may be supplied via the low pressure turbine stage shaft (16), whilst the quantity of oil present in the gap is determined by sealing rings (8,9).
