PURPOSE:To easily obtain a retrieving object for a character string regardless of its displaying way by using a means which connects plural character strings designated and detected on a picture to a single character string in the prescribed order. CONSTITUTION:When a character is designated on a picture, the information on the displayed character is registered in a picture information part 4 and then displayed with modulation of luminance via an output part 5. These actions are repeated and finished and a designated character string detecting part 8' checks the information on the part 4 to detect and connect the scattered designated character strings. In case the character following the designated character string is not equivalent to the designated one, the information on the character strings so far connected are sent to a detected character string connecting part 9. Then these connected character strings are defined as a first character string of the words to be retrieved. Then the part 8' continues detection of the designated character strings. Thus both parts 8' and 9 connect those designated and scattered character strings in the order of detection and produce a retrieved character string. At the final time point, a retrieving part 3 accesses an electronic dictionary 1 to retrieve the words of the retrieved character string.
