PURPOSE:To measure the horizontal displacement of an excavator continuously, by utilizing induction generated between loop shaped signal lines, which are arranged in parallel with a planned excavating line, and a magnetic field generating element, which is provided at the tip of the underground excavator, and measuring the right and left displacements of the excavator. CONSTITUTION:A starting pile 7 and a terminating pile 12 are provided at both ends of a planned excavating line 10. Loop shaped signal lines 9a and 9b are arranged at right and left symmetrical positions of the planned excavating line 10. Therefore, relation between a magnetic field generating element and the signal lines 9a and 9b from the starting pile 7 is as follows. For example, when the horizontal position of the magnetic field generating element is deviated to the signal line 9b from the planned line 10, the vertical component of the alternating magnetic field directed toward the surface of the ground from the magnetic field generating element 3 is received with the signal line 9b most intensely. Thus, the displacement of the tip of the excavator, to which the magnetic field generating element 3 is attached, in the right or left direction can be detected based on the difference in induced voltage between the signal lines 9a and 9b.
