NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R<1> and R<2> represent H, lower alkoxyl, etc.; X represents hydroxyl and Y represents cyano, or X and Y are combined with each other to form -X-Y- nd represent -O-) or hydroquinone type compound thereof. USE:An antitumor agent. PREPARATION:DX-52-1 expressed by formula II is initially used as a raw mate rial compound, which is reacted with a demethylating agent (example; boron tribromide) in an inert solvent, such as methylene chloride. Then the reaction liquid is poured into an ice water and a water phase is separated and purified to afford a compound expressed by formula III. Subsequently the compound is oxidized with potassium nitrosodisulfonate in an inert solvent, such as THF, to provide a compound expressed by formula IV, which is further reacted with a compound expressed by the formula R<1>'H ( R<1> represents the same as R<1> excepting H) in an inert solvent in the presence of an oxidizing agent. The produced compound expressed by formula V is reacted with a compound expressed by the formula R<2>'H (R<2>' represents the same as R<2> excepting H).
