Auger with a slotted sampling part 3 equipped with a semi- conical tip at the lower end 4. The tip closes the opening of the sampling part at the bottom 6, 7, 8 so soil does not enter the sampling part during driving down into the earth to the desired depth. As a result of this, the resistance of the earth during driving down is minimal, and there is no formation of plugs, which render operations more difficult, in the sampling part. The radial and tangential slotting of the sampling part 5 makes it possible for the desired soil column to be extracted by rotating the sampling part in when the latter has been driven down to the desired depth. Rotating the soil column into the sampling part makes it possible to extract small quantities of soil without problems of plug formation. <IMAGE>
