PURPOSE:To detect the position of even a track where a magnetic signal code is long with high accuracy by composing an MR element for track scanning of elements parallel to tracks and elements perpendicular to the tracks. CONSTITUTION:The MR head 1B is constituted so that MR elements 2a3 and 2b3 which move along tracks 5a and 5b of recording codes on a magnetic code plate 6 consists of elements 2a4 and 2b4 parallel to the tracks and elements 2a5 and 2b5 perpendicular to the tracks and the elements 2a4 and 2a5, and 2b4 and 2b5 are connected by conductors having no magnetic resistance. The elements 2a5 and 2b5 are arranged to a half as long as the elements 2a4 and 2b4. Consequently, the output signal of the MR head 1B for a track which has a long recording code has steep leading and trailing edges and the level drop of the center part of the output signal is extremely small, so even when the signal is converted into rectangular wave pulses, the pulses accurately correspond to the output signal and accurate position detection is performed. Further, outputs of magnetic signal code ends 5b1 and 5b2 are symmetrical about the center position of the magnetic signal code and the pulse signal which shows an actual signal code faithfully is obtained.
