PURPOSE:To uniformize the brightness on an image plane by changing the amplitudes of the voltages to be impressed to counter electrodes successively in a row direction. CONSTITUTION:The counter electrodes 4a, 4b...4n are divided to a plurality in each of respective lines and the respective counter electrodes are connected to a voltage setting circuit 8. The amplitudes of the voltages to be impressed to the counter electrodes 4a, 4b,...4n are successively changed in the row direction. The amplitudes of the counter electrodes are previously adjusted to the amplitudes increasing toward the lower lines and, therefore, the average of the effective values of the voltages to be impressed to liquid crystal cells 1 does not diminish and the brightness in the lower part of the image plane does not decrease even if the counter electrode potentials change during the time when the voltages to be impressed to the cells 1 are held. The brightness on the image plane is thereby uniformized.
