PURPOSE:To obtain a steel sheet for cans having superior weldability and fine appearance by plating both sides of a steel sheet with metallic chromium, plating one of the plated sides with Sn or the like in the form of stripes and the whole of the other with Sn or the like and entirely forming chromium oxide on both the sides. CONSTITUTION:The front and rear sides of a steel sheet are plated with metallic chromium. One of the plated sides corresponding to the insides of cans is plated with Sn, Zn, Ni, a Zn-Sn alloy, an Ni-Sn alloy or an Ni-P alloy in the form of stripes at intervals regulated according to the diameter of the cans. The whole of the other is plated with Sn, Zn, Ni, a Zn-Sn alloy, an Ni-Sn alloy or an Ni-P alloy. Chromium oxide is then entirely formed on both the sides of the steel sheet. Since a welding electrode confronts the soft nonferrous metal through the chromium oxide, the front side of the sheet is made smooth and the weldability is improved. Since the entirely plated side corresponds to the outsides of the cans, fine appearance is obtd. and both the insides and outsides of the cans are provided with superior rust and corrosion resistances.
