Apparatus for measuring the separation between two parallel surfaces, comprising two arms which are hinged in the manner of a compass and whose ends are intended to be brought into contact with the said surfaces. In order to allow direct, easy and precise reading of the separation measured, one of the arms 18 extends beyond the hinge pin 28 and comprises a base 20 defining a bearing plane with the end of the said arm, and the other arm 30 is integral with a pointer 32 which is situated on the same side as this other arm with respect to the said bearing plane, and whose end moves, when the said arms are moved together or apart, in front of a graduated dial 22 which is integral with the first branch 18. <IMAGE>
