PURPOSE:To enable separation and the feed of sheets, e.g. thick sheets, envelopes, which are difficult to separate and feed, without occurring of a poor feed, by a method wherein an induction angle is selected according to a kind of a contained sheet, and a nipped sheet is guided at an induction angle responding to the sheet. CONSTITUTION:When thick sheets Pe, e.g. envelopes, are fed, a cassette C2 for a thick sheet use only to guide the sheets at an entering angle suitable for the sheet Pe is selected, and the sheets Pe are placed on a sheet placing table 22 and a middle plate 27 of the cassette C2. In this case, regulation is made by a sheet loading height regulating plate 25 so that a sheet loading height is below that of a maximum loading amount of the sheets Pe. After the cassette C2 containing the sheets Pe is mounted to a cassette mounting part 6, the middle plate 27 is pushed from below by means of a pressurizing plate 11. The sheets Pe on the middle plate 27 are orderly guided at an entering angle theta suitable for the sheet Pe by means of a nip formed by a feed roller 2 and a separating pad 3, and are separated into one at a time without incurring poor feed.
