PURPOSE:To facilitate adjustment of a gap between a detecting element and a code plate, by providing a body with a guide element projecting along a rotating shaft and by guiding a retaining member of the detecting element by this guide element. CONSTITUTION:A rotary encoder has a body 22 fitted and fixed in an opening of a cover member 21. A rotating shaft 24 is borne rotatably in the axial part of the body 22. At the fore end of the rotating shaft 24 a code plate 25 is fitted. The body 22 has a guide element 26 projecting along the rotating shaft 24, and this guide element 26 has a guide surface guiding a retaining member 35 of a detecting element 29 in the axial direction of the rotating shaft 24 along this shaft.
