PURPOSE:To prevent the corrosion of a metal at a low cost when HF is allowed to react with an org. compd. in the presence of antimony pentahalide, by properly controlling the ratio of the total amt. of water in he HF and the org. compd. to the amt. of the HF fed. CONSTITUTION:HF and an org. compd. are fed into a reactor and allowed to react at about 60-150 deg.C in the presence of antimony pentahalide to produce a fluorinated org. compd. In the reactor, the HF coexisting with the antimony pentahalide exhibits high corrosiveness. When the HF and the org. compd. are fed into the reactor, the amt. of water is restricted so as to satisfy <=4X10<-5> molar ratio of the total amt. (y) of water in the HF and the org. compd. to the amt. (x) of the HF fed (y/x). Thus, the corrosion of a metal coming in contact with the reaction system, e.g., austenitic stainless steel is effectively prevented.
