PURPOSE:To provide an additive capable of improving the standing stability and high-concn. stability of an aq. slurry of a pulverized carbonaceous material through addition of only a small amt. of the salt, by incorporating a particular arom. hydrocarbon polymer having a sulfo group together with a clay of particular compsn. CONSTITUTION:At least one arom. hydrocarbon polymer (salt) having a sulfo group and comprising a member selected from among a polymer (A) contg. a polymerizable arom. sulfonic acid monomer component, as an essential component, and a polymerizable hydrocarbon monomer component, as an optional component, and a polymer (B) obtd. by sulfonating a polymer of at least one monomer selected from polymerizable hydrocarbon monomers contg. at least one polymerizable arom. monomer, as an essential component. This polymer (salt) and a clay contg. smectites and/or a clay mineral of a double-chain structure as a principal component are incorporated, thereby obtaining an additive for an aq. slurry of a pulverized carbonaceous material.
