PURPOSE:To provide the title display element improved in repeatability characteristics, which comprises two electrode plates each having an electrode provided on one side thereof, one of said plates having a particular thin electroconductive polymer film provided on said electrode, and an electrolyte sandwiched between the two plates. CONSTITUTION:A glass plate 1 (anode) having an electrode 2 on one side thereof and an electrode (cathode) disposed opposite thereto are immersed in a soln. contg. an electrolyte and a fluoroaniline deriv. of the formula [wherein at least one of R<1>-R<5> is F and at least one of R<1>-R<5> is H, with the remaining groups being one or at least two members selected from a halogen other than F, an alkyl, an aryl, an alkoxy, an aralkyl, nitro, a sulfonic group, a ketone, an aldehyde, an amide a carboxyl, a hydroxyl, cyano and -COOR (wherein R is an aliph. or arom. alcohol residue)]. Then, electrolytic polymn. is performed in an inert gas atmosphere, thereby forming a thin film 3 of an electroconductive polymer on the electrode 2. Thereafter, the plate 1 and a glass plate 6 having an electrode 5 provided on one side thereof are arranged so as to cause the electrodes 2, 5 to face each other.
