The aim of the invention is a rapidly switchable liquid-crystal display element. The object consists of specifying a method for driving liquid-crystal display elements having nematic liquid-crystals, by means of which the time for the transmission change is shortened and which also permits the use of nematic liquid-crystal substances for application in rapid output displays and optical switches. This object is achieved in that the apolar liquid-crystal medium in the field-free state is displaced into a polar state by means of an electrical field and is switched as a polar medium by means of a subsequent pulse.
