PURPOSE:To provide an additive capable of improving the standing stability and high-concn. stability of an aq. slurry of a pulverized carbonaceous material, by incorporating a particular arom. hydrocarbon polymer having a sulfo group, a polyether compd. and a clay such as smectites. CONSTITUTION:An arom. hydrocarbon polymer(salt) having a sulfo group and comprising a member selected from among a polymer (A) contg. a polymerizable arom. sulfoic acid monomer component, as an essential component, and a polymerizable hydrocarbon monomer component, as an optional component, and a polymer (B) obtd. by sulfonating a polymer of a polymerizable hydrocarbon monomer contg. a polymerizable arom. monomer, as an essential component. The title additive is obtd. by incorporating the above-mentioned hydrocarbon polymer (salt), a polyether compd. (deriv). obtd. by adding an alkylene oxide contg. ethylene oxide as an essential component to an active hydrogen compd., and a clay contg. smectites and/or a clay mineral of a double-chain structure as a principal component.
