PURPOSE:To efficiently process lots of sheets to be scanned in a short time by using the outer and inner circumferential faces of an endless belt of the subscanning carrier system respectively as 1st and 2nd subscanning carrier paths and scanning the two sheets to be scanned simultaneously by a single device. CONSTITUTION:1st and 2nd read means 17, 18 are arranged respectively to the outer and inner sides of the endless belt 15 and laser beams 42, 42a are radiated to the storage fluorescent sheet A carried in the subscanning direction (direction of arrow B) via the outer and inner circumferential faces 15a, 15b of the endless belt 15 under the action of read means 17, 18 to read the radiant ray picture information. Thus, the picture reader 10 attains the scanning read of the two storage fluorescent sheets A simultaneously and the scanning read of the storage fluorescent sheet A is efficiently attained at once.
