PURPOSE:To take an accurate measurement by providing at least a pair of a projector which outputs a laser light beam and a light receiver for the beam in the middle of a conveyance track across a body to be measured. CONSTITUTION:A conveying device 2 is driven to pass lumber, etc., as the body A to be measured through the inspection and measurement part 6 of a shape inspecting and measuring instrument 1. Then the projector 7 and light receiver 8 which are provided at the periphery of the inspection and measurement part 6 send and receive the laser light beam so that the side body part of the body A to be measured is projected, and the range wherein the projection is impeded by the body A to be measured is inspected and measured to inspect and measure the size of the body part. Consequently, the laser light is utilized as an inspecting and measuring medium, so luminous flux for inspection and measurement can be arranged closely and the luminous flux of its own has extremely high linearity, so the inspection and measurement are carried out with high accuracy.
