PURPOSE:To make it possible to provide the titled novel compound correspond ing to n=1/6 in the chemical formula (YbFeO3)nFeO, by respectively replacing Yb<3+> and Fe<3+> with Lu<3+> and Zn<2+>. CONSTITUTION:Metallic Lu, lutetium oxide or a compound (A) decomposable into the lutetium oxide by heating, metallic iron, iron oxide or a compound (B) decomposable into the iron oxide by heating and metallic zinc, zinc oxide or a compound (C) decomposable into the zinc oxide by heating are prepared. The substances (A), (B) and (C) are mixed at 1:1:6 atomic ratio of Lu:Fe:Zn. The resultant mixture is then heated at >=650 deg.C in the air, an oxidizing atmosphere or a reducing atmosphere in which the Lu and Fe are not respectively reduced from the trivalent ion state and the Zn is not reduced from the bivalent ion state. Thereby the aimed novel brown powdery compound useful as magnetic, semiconductor materials and catalysts is obtained.
