A plunger piston adapted for variable compression ratio for internal combustion engines is provided in which piston parts arranged telescopically one within another render possible a variation of compression ratio dependent upon the combustion chamber pressure, by variation of volume of fluid-filled control chambers. A pressure-limiting valve 6 is connected to one control chamber 4 of the piston so that the guide path for its spring-loaded closure body 9 is inclined in relation to the longitudinal axis of the piston. This arrangement achieves a regulating characteristic independent of engine speed. <IMAGE>
