The brakes (19) of the beam (4) and its drive motor (11) can be controlled by a preprogrammable computer and processor stage (20, 21) which compares entered desired information with actual information supplied by monitoring means on the machine. The computer and processor stage (20, 21) is circuit-connected to a spatially separate EDP system, comprising at least one video display unit (31), a keyboard (32) and a printer (33), via a multiple input (35) and a multiple output (36) for the transmission of a plurality of additional information items. These measures make it possible, on the one hand, to carry out the control of the machine in a centralised manner from outside the machine room and, on the other hand, additionally to incorporate further components into the winding process. <IMAGE>
