PURPOSE:To increase a threshold value for optical damage of a waveguide, to elevate nonlinear characteristic of the waveguide and to facilitate its prepn. by using dispersed poly(methyl methacrylate) for an org. nonlinear optical material. CONSTITUTION:The title nonlinear optical waveguide is constituted of a low refractive index layer 31 and a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layer 41a contg. an org. nonlinear optical material (A) disposed therein, both being laminated on a substrate 1. A material consisting of molecules having high nonlinear susceptibility (e.g. 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline) is usable as the material (A), and the layer 41a is formed by coating the material (A) and PMMA in a solvent which is not aggressive for the layer 31. Further the layer 31 is formed by coating a soln. of an F-contg. resin or a silicone resin, etc. |
