In order, in the comminution and grinding of brittle material to be ground, with an upstream high-pressure roll press and a downstream tube mill with preliminary separation of the ground material, to be able to use the comparatively low specific total energy requirement without having to carry out costly modification measures on a conventional tube mill which was originally present, it is proposed according to the invention that the tube mill (14) is and remains constructed in a customary manner, that is to say without a rotationally fixedly arranged material fall-out housing, with a central inlet opening (15) through one end wall journal and a central discharge opening (16) through the other end wall journal, and that the discharge (13) of the high-pressure roll press (10) is introduced, through the central tube mill discharge opening (16) and through a central opening (20) in the discharge wall (17), into the material discharge of the tube mill countercurrent to the tube mill discharge material which is guided, together with the de-agglomerated roll press discharge, through peripheral openings of the same discharge wall (17) to the separator (25). <IMAGE>
