A liquid-crystal display device of the twisted nematic type is described, in which the carrier substrates consist of plastic. In order to simplify the production of such display devices and to prevent the consequences which follow from the frequently occurring birefringence of the plastics, in accordance with the invention the polarisers required for large TN-LCD are integrated into the display device, specifically preferably in such a way that the carrier substrate directly contains a polarising material such as iodine which was uniformly aligned in the substrate material by stretching the latter. <IMAGE>
