A new method for determination of lactose intolerance in mammals, including man, uses 4-0-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-1,5 anhydro-D-glucitol (cpd.I) as a probe. Cpd. I is metabolised by the enzyme lactase to 1,5-anhydro-D-glucitol (cpd.2) which is excreted in the urine and can be detected by gas or liquid chromatography. |
