PURPOSE:To shorten the inverting time of a magnetic field and also to obtain a compact and lightweight bias magnetic field impressing device, by limiting a recording or erasing magnetic field produced from an electromagnet fixed at a main body to a small range at the periphery of a laser irradiating part. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic field produced when an electromagnet 1 is energized produces a recording or erasing magnetic field on the surface of a magneto- optical recording medium 6 at a short distance part between a 1st magnetic path member 2 and a head magnetic path member 3 via said member 2. Then said magnetic field returns to the electromagnet 1 from the member 3 via a 2nd magnetic path member 4. The route of the magnetic field is reversed by the energizing direction to the electromagnet 1. The area where this magnetic field is generated is limited only to the periphery of an irradiating point of a laser light beam. Then the member 3 and the recording or erasing magnetic field are moved with shift of an optical head 5.
