PURPOSE:To prevent focusing on a secondary object in a central part by sequentially executing the range finding from the center of a screen to a periphery and deciding whether or not range finding signals detected in the process belong to a prescribed object distance range. CONSTITUTION:A position signal obtained by a semiconductor position detector (PSD) 13 is porcessed in a range finding signal detection circuit 16 and inputted in a microprocessor (MPU) 17 as the finalization range finding signal. By range finding from the central part of the photographing screen to the periphery, the range finding in the system of putting emphasis on the central part is executed. And whether or not the range finding signal detected in the process of the range finding is within the object distance range where the probability of existence of the main object is high is decided and according to the decided result the set position of a photographing lens is decided, or the measurement of distance is more continued toward the peripheral part of the screen. The range finding considering not only the distribution of the main object in the photographing screen but also the distribution of the object in an object distance direction, is executed. |
