<p>PURPOSE:To enable quick high sensitive measurement of delicate reaction in a solution, by making waveguide light incident into a light waveguide integrated with an electrode to release an evanescent wave. CONSTITUTION:A solution to be measured is arranged on the top of a transparent electrode 2 provided on a glass substrate 1. The refractive index of the glass substrate is normallym about 1.5, the transparent electrode 2 employs, for example, SnO2, which is 2.093 in the refractive index and additionally, this system uses an aqueous solution (with the refractive index of about 1.33) as solution. Hence, in this system, the rofractive index is so greatly different between interfaces to allow the confining of light into the transparent electrode 2. In this case, the transparent electrode 2 functions as thin filmy light waveguide. When light is made incident into the light waveguide, a part (evanescent wave) of an electrolytic component of a waveguide light spreads within the solution and as this electrolytic component is absorbed by a chemical species, the waveguide light is attenuated. This, chemical species absorbing the evanescent wave can be determined by monitoring the waveguide light.</p> |
