A controlling system for the automatic transmission of an automobile to cooperate with the usual instruction element for producing an actuation signal for shifting the transmission gears (5) and the clutch (4). The system is chiefly comprised of a gear position sensor (not shown), sensible to the gear position of the transmission gears (5), and a diagnostic check element (35) which determines, based on the gear position signal from the sensor and other information regarding the automobile running, the validity of the actuation signal.
