PURPOSE:To reduce the irregularity of coil ends by disposing an edge detector near a strip conductor winding unit through a movable supporter moving in response to the outer diameter of a platelike coil to reduce the difference of strip zigzag distance of the detector to the unit as small as possible. CONSTITUTION:A guide cylinder 32 rotatably supported to a foundation 31, a winding unit 36 capable of moving laterally of a strip conductor 38 by rotatably supporting a bobbin 37 which forms a platelike coil 39 by winding the conductor 38 guided by the cylinder 32, an edge detector 40 for detecting the zigzag movement of the conductor 38, and a unit for moving the winding unit 36 according to the detected value are provided. In such a strip winding machine 1, the detector 40 is secured to the unit 36 near the winding section 39a of the coil 39 through a movable supporter 2 for automatically movably supporting it radially of the coil 39 in response to the variation in the outer diameter of the coil 39. Thus, the irregularity of the ends is eliminated by the edge detection and the zigzag distance correction synchronized with the timing for winding the conductor.
