PURPOSE:To effectively utilize a file area by dividing extent including a fault sector in details, allocating the extent of normal sector again so as to avoid reallocation of the extent of the faulty sector thereby preventing repetitive occurrence of input/output error. CONSTITUTION:While sectors #i, #i+1, #i+2 are managed as the extent #1 and the sectors #j, #j+1, #j+2 are managed as the extent #2 by a file management table 2, if a fault takes place in the sector #i+1, the sector #i+1 is divided into three the #i+1 normal sectors #i, #i+2, they are designated as extents #1-1, #1-b, #1-c respectively to set a fault display flag F corresponding to the extent #1-b. In deleting the file including the faulty sector, the extent 1-b of the flag 1 is not opened. Thus, the extents #1-a, #1-c including the normal sector are opened and reallocated, but the reallocation of the extent #1-b including th4e faulty sector is avoided.
