PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal element having high contrast generating scarcely uneven display by interposing a thin layer of liquid phase between a set of transparent substrates constructed by superposing a transparent electrode and an orientation layer successively. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode 3 and an orientation layer 5 are superposed on a glass substrate 1, and a transparent electrode 4 and an orientation film 6 are superposed on a glass substrate 2. Liquid crystal 7 are coated on the orientation film forming a thin layer. These substrates are bonded tightly to each other by superposing, heating, and cooling slowly. The periphery of the substrates is sealed with a sealing agent 8. High molecular liquid crystals having positive dielectric anisotropic mesogen group as side chains or ferrodielectric liquid crystals having either one layer among chiral smectic C phase, F phase, or I phase is used as the liquid crystal to be used. A dichroic dye may be contained in the liquid crystal. By this constitution, a liquid crystal element having low driving potential, scarce display unevenness, and high contrast and suitability for high speed response is obtd.
