PURPOSE:To obtain chromatic hydrous titanium oxide of a blackish blue-blue color system which has excellent stability and is harmless by heating an aq. soln. contg. tervalent Ti salt and urea at prescribed ratios to hydrolyze the same. CONSTITUTION:The chromatic hydrous titanium oxide having an absorption wavelength at 500-800nm is obt. by adding (B) the urea at a ratio of 1/3-6 A/B molar ratio to the aq. soln., which is prepd. by dissolving (A) the tervalent Ti salt such as TiCl3, TiBr3 or Ti2(SO4)3 to make 0.1-3mol/l concn., then heating the aq. soln. to 800-100 deg.C to hydrolyze the same while gradually decom posing the component B, ending the reaction to form the precipitate of the hydrous titanium oxide in the state in which the pH in the aq. soln. changes from neutral to alkalinity in, for example, about 4-10hr after the start of the heating, and, if necessary, maturing the hydrous titanium oxide for 10-12hr further in the soln., then subjecting the soln. to separating, rinsing and drying.
