PURPOSE:To eliminate widthwise fluctuation of plate thickness by supporting a strip with a pressing roll for pressing the strip against a polishing means and a back-up roll for supporting said roll longitidinally to press the back-up roll move it back and forth in the direction of pressing roll. CONSTITUTION:To support a pressing roll 4 without hindering its rotation, a plurality of back-up rolls 5 having the rolls 4 staggered are arranged, or the back-up rolls 5 are assembled in the tandem manner. A pair of the tandem- like assemblies are arranged in parallel and the roll 4 is provided in the trough- like portion between the assemblies. Thus, the roll 4 is supported from the directions having positive and negative directional components to the longitudinal direction of a strip 7 to prevent the longitudinal deformation of strip 7. As a result, a high flatness of strip can be provided. Also, by giving a predetermined pressing force widthwise to the strip 7 widthwise plate thickness can be controlled at will. |
