PURPOSE:To prepare pitch having a high degree of carbonization and free from mesophase, by adding an alcohol to coal tar pitch for thermal reaction and conducting thermal reforming or distillation of the reaction product under such a condition that any mesophase does not form. CONSTITUTION:An alcohol (e.g., propanol) is added to coal tar pitch (preferably middle softening point pitch having a softening point of 70-85 deg.C in view of the adjustment of the softening point after thermal reforming), and the thermal reaction of the mixture is then conducted. The reaction is conducted at 250 deg.C or above for at least 5min. The thermal reforming or distillation of tar pitch after treatment with the alcohol is then conducted. The thermal reforming is conducted at 330-450 deg.C for 1-10hr. When the temp. is above this temp. range, a mesophase is unfavorably formed. Thus, there is prepd. a pitch having a high degree of carbonization and free from mesophase. The pitch thus prepd. exhibits high performance when used as binder pitch and impregnated pitch and is expected to improve the yield of the product and the properties of the product. |
