PURPOSE:To enhance the supporting accuracy of a workpiece by arranging an auxiliary pawl in the vicinity of a main pawl in an automatic work rest so that the support of the workpiece is shifted between the main pawl and the auxiliary pawl when a machining tool passes through just before the main pawl. CONSTITUTION:When a workpiece 1 is machined by a cylinder grinding machine or a lathe, a main pawl 8 in an automatic workpiece rest 21 supports the workpiece 1 while it follows the outer peripheral surface shape of the workpiece 1 in accordance with a value measured by a displacement sensor 7 until the time just before the time when the cutting position of a grindstone 2 passes through. Further, an auxiliary pawl 27 only follows the outer peripheral shape of the workpiece 1, and at the time just before that time when the grindstone 2 passes through the main pawl 8, the auxiliary pawl 27 is locked. Thereafter, the workpiece 1 is supported by the auxiliary pawl 27. Meanwhile, after the grindstone 2 is moved to one end of the workpiece 1, if the machining is made in the reverse direction, when the cutting position of the grindstone 2 reaches just before the auxiliary pawl 27, the displacement sensor 7 measures the distance to the outer peripheral surface of the workpiece 1, and therefore, the main pawl 8 is advanced by that distance to hold the workpiece 1. |
