PURPOSE:To widen the recording band of a luminance signal and to improve the resolution by recording the luminance signal of a video signal by one frame as two tracks with a guard band and recording a chrominance signal on a region of the guard band between the two tracks. CONSTITUTION:Switch circuits 1-4 are connected to the position W and a FM luminance signal is fed to a HPF 14W. The HPF 14W is cut off only the region of a DPSK signal. The FM luminance signal is fed to a Y(luminance signal)/C(chrominance carrier signal) mix circuit 15, but in this case, no chrominance signal is fed to a circuit 15 but only the luminance signal is recorded as tracks TA, TB. As the chrominance signal, a color difference signal subjected to line sequential processing from a line sequential circuit 24 is given to a time compression circuit 28, from which a chrominance signal by one frame is subjected to time compression at a time of one field, FM modulation and is fed to an adder circuit 30. A high-frequency bias signal is supplied externally to the circuit 30 and the added output is fed to a head 33. The head 30 is arranged to operate the region of a guard band GB and a FM chrominance signal is recorded as a track TC on a guard band by the head 33.
