PURPOSE:To prevent the gradation of a hue from being lowered even when a small capacity of masking table remains, by changing the quantizing width of the hue in a masking table which outputs each color density value of cyan, magenta, and yellow based on the values of a luminance signal, a hue signal, and a chroma signal corresponding to the value of the masking table. CONSTITUTION:Tables 81-83 quantize the value of the hue signal H, and output them as the addresses of the masking tables 91-93. The masking table 91 quantizes a range of + or -90 deg. from the hue of cyan with width of 36 deg., and quantizes the ranges other than that with width of 60 deg.. The masking table 92 quantizes the range of + or -90 deg. from the hue of magenta with the width of 36 deg., and quantizes the range other than that with the width of 60 deg.. The masking table 93 quantizes the range of + or -90 deg. from the hue of yellow with the width of 36 deg. and quantizes the range other than that with the width of 60 deg.. Also, the masking tables 91-93 are set so that respective quantizing position of the cyan, the magenta, and the yellow can be prevented from being superposed.
