PURPOSE:To shorten a retrieval time, by providing a means which selects the decision processing of a retrieval condition decision part after the collation of an input character string or in the middle way of the collation. CONSTITUTION:A character retrieval circuit is constituted of a character collation part 1, a collation result latch part 2, a retrieval condition decision part 3, and a control part 4 which controls the parts 1-3 and includes a selection means. The selection means controls the decision part 3 by analyzing a retrieval condition inputted from the outside via a command line 17, detecting the case of the retrieval condition whose retrieved result is recognized in the middle way of the collation of the input character string, and outputting a selection signal to perform decision at the decision part 3 at every character of the input character string, or after completing the collation of the input character string to a signal line 15. In such a way, in a case where it is enough to satisfy either two conditions in one character string, it is possible to interrupt a collation processing at a time when either is satisfied without performing the retrieval of another condition, thereby, it is possible to perform the retrieval processing at high speed.
